Africa Day commemorates the founding in 1963 of the Organisation of African Unity, the forerunner to the African Union.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Africa Day: “Today, we celebrate Africa Day and the founding of the Organization of African Unity 59 years ago,

Minister Naledi Pandor, will speak at two events in Cape Town this week marking the 20th anniversary of the launch of the African Union (AU). At both events, invited guests include academic officials, students, think tanks, members of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee and civil society.

Minister Pandor was speaking during a presentation of her department’s Budget Vote to the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation. The budget has increased by at least 1.3% from the 2021/21 financial year to about R6.6 billion in this financial year.

The annual Africa Month – and Africa Day on Wednesday, 25 May – is being celebrated under the theme: “The Year of Nutrition: Strengthening resilience in nutrition and food security on the African continent”.

The truck – which was converted from diesel to hydrogen – is also powered in part by lithium-ion batteries. It is a world first.
